The images from "Millennia, Images from Greece and Turkey" were made in the summer of 1998. In making these images, I attempted to not only record the grandeur of these ancient lands, but to produce new portraits in which the past, the present and the future seem to be one and in which water, air, earth and light surround these ancient places. For this series, I used a Finney pinhole camera, a commercial handmade camera which is no longer being manufactured. The camera has a bellows that extends from 1-1/2" to 8" and a revolving turret with 4 pinholes, 3 zone plates, and a viewing pinhole for viewing the image on the ground glass. I often used the viewing pinhole to create a very out of focus image, a zone plate at the "wrong" focal length, or a pinhole at the "wrong" focal length. During film development, I soaked the film in fixer prior to development. Luck played an important part in this process of altering the negative.
